really kicked it into high gear was the fact that the interstate team was the Adeladies! Add to that a double header bout at a new venue (one of WAs largest sporting facilities) and a sell-out crowd and it was an unforgettable night of roller derby action.
First up was the Perth Roller Derby B team, The Rumble Bees, taking on Bunbury Roller Derby with a few Margaret River Roller Derby skaters adding muscle to the line-up. The Rumble Bees quickly dominated thanks to some fantastic Jamming by Julia Killhard, Posh Slice and Ja’Main Fear. The girls from the South West were blocking hard and fast and the paramedics were called on to the track half way through the first period for PRD’s Trans Em who took a block to the head which she shook off and soldiered on.
Bunbury worked hard to pick up their points with some fantastic work by Jammers raPAINzel, I Am Slam and Margaret River’s Vanilla I-Scream but Perth’s blockers were a force to be reckoned with and by the half time whistle Perth were sitting on 105 to Bunbury’s 29. In the second half, Bunbury worked some good strategic plays and there were whispers of a come back but the score gap earned by Perth in the first half was too wide and the bout ended with the Rumble Bees defeating Bunbury 171 to 75.
The main event kicked off shortly after and there was no doubt that Perth Roller Derby’s All Stars were facing some tough competition in the form of The Adeladies. ADRD jumped ahead quickly thanks to unstoppable Jamming by D’Juana Fightme and Bone Shaker with the score half way through the first period Adelaide 43 to Perth 20. Some speedy jamming by Mary Fagdalene saw Perth’s score increase to 36, but The Adeladies continued to add numbers to the board and by half time the visitors were streaks ahead, 137 to 44.
The All Stars fought hard through the second period, with some impressive blocking by Minnie Screwdriver, Tora Hymenov and Freyda Nuffin and Jamming by Dirty KO, Lady Lah Lah and crowd favourite Annie Thingoes. The combined efforts of The Adeladies blockers including Jetfire, Push My Toosh and Ukulula saw the final whistle blow and The Adeladies score had climbed to 269 to PRD All Stars 95.
The Perth Roller Derby league as a whole gained so much from the experience, strategy, ref contacts, great friendships with the visiting skaters, lessons in co-ordinating interstate games and so much more. It was an unforgettable night for everyone involved and we all left the Arena with big smiles on our faces. Most Valuable Players for the night were:
PRD Rumble Bees: Julia Killhard
Bunbury Roller Derby: Da’Lish Deestruction
PRD All Stars: Mary Fagdalene
The Adeladies: Ukulula
