Derby Terminology to help you understand
the game
Blocker The BLOCKERS are the “pack” they work together in both offensive and defensive roles at the same time – they must help their own Jammer move through the pack as well as preventing the opposing Jammer from getting through and scoring points!
Jammer
The JAMMER wears a star on her helmet and scores the points for her team by passing the Blockers from the opposing team. One point is scored for each opponent she passes starting from the second pass through the pack.
Lead Jammer
The LEAD JAMMER status is usually the first Jammer to legally get through the pack on the first pass. Lead Jammers can call the jam off at any time by repeatedly touching your hips, this prevents the opposing Jammer from scoring more points.

Pack
The pack is the majority of blockers on the track. In able to form a pack there must be an opposing blocker within this group formed. When you are not in ‘the pack’ blockers cannot come into contact with the opposing jammer in anyway.
Pivot
The PIVOT is the Blocker with the stripe down the middle of her helmet and she sets the pace and communicates strategy to her team. The Pivot may also become the Jammer during the jam if the Jammer chooses to “Pass The Star” (remove her helmet cover and pass it to the Pivot).
Jam
A ‘jam’ is the time when skaters are on track playing the game. 2 minutes is the maximum time players may be on the track in each passage of play.. The jam may last less than two minutes if the lead Jammer calls off the jam.
Calling off the jam
The Lead Jammer can call the jam off at any time by repeatedly touching your hips, this prevents the opposing Jammer from scoring more points.
Scoring pass
Any pass through the pack after the Jammer’s initial pass (the nonscoring pass). In a scoring pass, Jammers gain a point for their team with every opposing blocker they move ahead of.
Wall
When two or more blockers skate side-by-side to strategically stop the Jammer from passing them

Grand slam
When a jammer succeeds in lapping the opposing team’s Jammer.
Rink rash
A skin injury that occurs when apart of your body is dragged along the track floor. Often occurs when being hit.
Women’s flat track derby association. This association provides the rules of flat track roller derby. It is well known by all flat track players around the world.
Whip
A technique used between two members of the same team. A Jammer may use a blockers ha arm/hip/any other helpful limb to help propel them ahead at a faster speed.
